Kapwing review: is the free plan safe to monetize?

1. Commercial-use rights

   Level 2/414 / 28 pts

   Does the license actually permit monetizing the free-tier output (monetized video / paid client deliverable)? The single most decisive factor.

   “All images sourced or generated on Kapwing can be downloaded and used for personal and commercial purposes No permission is required, though proper attribution is required for free users, and encouraged and appreciated for premium subscribers.”

   Commercial use is affirmatively granted on the free tier (not unclear), but it is conditional: free users must attribute, and a creator who omits the required attribution trips out of license compliance. Hence L2 conditional, not L0.

2. Free-plan monetization gate

   Level 3/413.5 / 18 pts

   Free-tier blockers that make output unusable even when commercial use is allowed: watermark, 'personal-only' wording, publish-barring caps.

   “A watermark is added to all projects made by users on the free plan, while no watermarks are added to projects made by users on the Kapwing Pro paid plan. The watermark will be in the bottom right corner of exported projects”

   Visible bottom-right watermark on every free export, removable only by paying for Pro. Pricing page confirms free exports carry the watermark and 720p/1-min caps.

3. Output ownership & sublicensing

   Do you own (or get a clean, transferable, sublicensable license to) the output? Decisive for agency/client work where rights must be handed over.

   Risk the output infringes third-party rights or triggers a platform claim: training-data provenance, indemnity, likeness/voice-clone consent, YouTube synthetic-content exposure.

   All liability shifted to the user, with an as-is warranty disclaimer and a prohibition on AI scenes representing real individuals without consent. No indemnity. L3.

6. Terms stability

   How likely are today's rights to be quietly changed or revoked tomorrow? Modification clause, retroactivity, notice, and observed change history. The factor the ToS-monitor sells against.

   Standard right to update with advance notice of material changes. Not unilateral-without-notice, not retroactive-adverse. L1.

7. Creator practicality
